Statement by the Spokesperson on the recent judicial decision in Nicaragua

Author: EEAS.

The following press release was issued by the EEAS on .

Several national and international stakeholders have raised questions about the judicial decision to dismiss members of the Parliament.

In this respect the EU underlines the importance of the rule of law, including the separation of executive and judicial powers, democratic pluralism and freedom of expression, as fundamental values upon which representative government is built.

Political pluralism is the backbone of any modern democratic society and is one of the fundamental values of the Union. Political competition leads to better governance and results in better socio-economic performance to tackle poverty which is at the core of our agenda of cooperation with the Government of Nicaragua.

The EU stands ready to work with the authorities and other stakeholders to promote the consolidation of a solid representative democracy.
