Without a doubt, the Scottish referendum on independence will be one of the most significant events of the year, even one that included Europe wide elections and a new Commission.

Although the Scots were adamant that their case is unique they also hosted a number of independence minded politicians from across Europe and it is this wider interest that widens the debate from Scotland’s future to include that of other nations and peoples, including the whole of the EU’s half a billion citizens.
