Incoming European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has changed the title of her migration commissioner from “Protecting our European Way of Life” following criticism it had far-right connotations.

Greece’s Margaritis Schinas was tapped to take over the portfolio when von der Leyen takes charge of the Commission next month. Schinas, who has avoided using the controversial title since being given the position, has defended von der Leyen as she waited to decide whether or not she would change the name of the portfolio.

Outgoing Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said in September that he believed the title would end up being changed, adding, “I don’t like the idea that the European way of life is opposed to migration.”

After MEPs blocked von der Leyen’s three picks for Commissioners, the date for her to take over the European Executive was pushed back from November 1 to December 1, at the earliest.
