Varoufakis wants to launch pan-European party

On the eve of his resignation, Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis spoke to the media after the first results of the referendum in Athens, Greece, 05 July 2015. This snap press conference is one of the incidents that may have driven a wedge between Varoufakis and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

The Greek former Minister of the Economy will not be running in the upcoming elections, but has his sights set higher.


Yanis Varoufakis, former Finance Minister of Greece, will not be running for election, he revealed to ABC radio in Australia. Rather, Varoufakis, sets his sights higher, and a new pan-European party.
"National parties forming flimsy alliances within a Europe that operates like a bloc, like a macroeconomy, in its own interests—that model doesn't work anymore. I think we should try to aim for a European network that at some point evolves into a pan-European party."
