Democrats claimed US President Donald Trump must be removed from office for enlisting foreign interference in US elections.

Four experts, three picked by Democrats and one by the Republicans, have been testifying in the US Congress, in the House Judiciary Committee’s first impeachment hearing on 4 December. Three of them accused Trump of obstructing justice.

The experts chosen by the Democrats were Stanford University’s Pamela Karlan, Harvard University’s Noah Feldman and Michael Gerhardt from the University of North Carolina.

The expert chosen by the Republicans was George Washington University’s Jonathan Turley. He said Trump’s actions were wrong, but not impeachable.

The impeachment process began in September after a whistleblower complained to Congress that Trump was asking Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rival Joe Biden, and to interfere in the 2020 election in his favor. The three experts described Trump’s efforts to seek help from a foreign nation as a crime.

Feldman said that Trump’s interactions with Ukraine show him “corruptly using the powers of the presidency for personal political gain”.

“The Do Nothing Democrats had a historically bad day yesterday in the House. They have no Impeachment case and are demeaning our Country. But nothing matters to them, they have gone crazy. Therefore I say, if you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast, so we can have a fair trial in the Senate, and so that our Country can get back to business”, Trump wrote on Twitter.
