Britain will have to propose a candidate for the European Commission if the UK remains an EU member-state beyond October 31, incoming Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday.

“There might be an extension and the UK will still be in the EU, then of course I would ask the UK to send a Commissioner,” von der Leyen said.

President Jean-Claude Juncker’s Commission would formally end its five-year term on Oct 31, although a one month delay of the transition is expected until commissioners from France, Hungary and Romania are confirmed.

According to Finnish Prime Minister Ante Rinne “maybe all” EU member states favour a UK extension but the question is the length.
