At least two Afghan civilians have been killed and 73 others injured in an attack on a key American military base in Afghanistan on 11 December.
A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-packed vehicle in front of the gate of an unused hospital almost adjacent to the Bagram Airfield in Parwan province, officials said. The Taliban took responsibility for the attack. Officials from the interior ministry said all six assailants were killed.
The attack comes as the United States recently resumed peace talks with the Taliban in Doha, Qatar, after President Donald Trump halted the negotiations in September over the killing of a US soldier.
A few days earlier, a report on the so-called “Afghanistan Papers” published by the Washington Post showed the US misled the public on the 18-year war in Afghanistan.
The report contains transcripts of confidential documents. They reveal that the US public has been misled about the endless war with unachievable goals.
The papers show the view of key figures involved in the war, that has cost $1 trillion and in which of thousands of civilians have died.
“After the killing of Osama bin Laden, I said that Osama was probably laughing in his watery grave considering how much we have spent on Afghanistan”, said Jeffrey Eggers, a retired Navy Seal and White House staffer for Bush and Obama.
