“Irrespective of your nationality, we are one team and this includes our British colleagues,” is the key message of the European Parliament president Antonio Tajani to the EU House employees and MEPs.
Immediately following the European Council’s statement following Brexit notification from the UK, Tajani sent a letter to all MEPs and employees in the European Parliament, asking them not to discriminate against their British colleagues.
“Today, the United Kingdom officially notified its intention to withdraw from the European Union. For me, as President of the Parliament and as a European citizen, this is not a good day,” said Tajani at his address.
“We are at the starting point of complex negotiations to define the terms and conditions of the United Kingdom’s departure,” Tajani adds. “The European Parliament will stand united in defending the interest of our citizens.”
Asking for everyone’s cooperation to “tackle the upocoming challenges,” Tajani underlined that irrespective of nationality, “we are one team and this includes our British colleagues”. To them, Tajani said that their expertise and commitment to Europe “are valued at all levels in this House.”
European Parliament president Tajani is expected to hold a meeting later in the day with Brexit negotiator for the Chamber, Guy Verhofstadt in Brussels.
