Switzerland: School students must shake the hand of their teachers


Most of the Muslim Swiss groups welcomed the decision stressing that there is no religious justification for refusing to shake a female teacher's hand.

Two months ago it was revealed that two Syrian schoolboys were allowed not to shake the hand of their female teacher because their father told them that physical contact with a woman who is not a family member is prohibited by religion.

School students in the Swiss canton of Basil are from now on obliged to shake their teachers’ hand or else their parents will pay a fine of up to 5,000 francs (about €4,500).

The ruling was announced on Wednesday, by the canton authorities as they wanted to make clear that the secular values and the Swiss traditions are above religion.
