The trial of the Uzbek terrorist Rakhmat Akilov came to a close on Wednesday in Stockholm, Sweden. the Court has yet to issue a sentence.
The 40-year old Akilov confessed to driving a stolen truck over a pedestrian road in Stockholm on April 7, 2017. The Uzbek national mowed down as many pedestrians as he found on his way, killing five and leaving 10 with life-changing injuries.
The trial started in January and had 155 plaintiffs. Over 100 witnesses testified in the trial and the prosecution summed up its case last Thursday, April 26. The defendant said he has no regrets, claiming he awaited divine judgement.
His objective was to punish Sweden for its participation in the campaign against the Islamic State (IS); he confirmed that he sought authorization for the attack from connections in the IS organization via chat apps. However, he saw his survival as a failure.
