Socialists congratulate Imamoglu for winning Istanbul’s mayoral election

The Turkish Electoral Commission ordered a repeat of the mayoral election in Istanbul for 23 June 2019, after Turkish President Erdogan's AK Party had alleged there was 'corruption' behind his party losing to a candidate of main opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) in the 31 March 2019 polls.

Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament congratulated the opposition CHP Party candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu for winning the mayoral election on 23 June in Istanbul, Turkey.
“I hope that finally this time President Erdoğan understands the message from the people and he will react positively to the voters’ demands asking for more openness and better living conditions.”, stated the S&D leader Iratxe García.
