Slovakia will pledge to increase its defence budget to 1.6 percent of GDP by 2020 at the Newport NATO summit on September 4-5, President Andrej Kiska told journalists before leaving for the summit on Wednesday.

"When it comes to the defence budget, we'll commit ourselves to halting the drop in spending and allocating 20 percent of yearly defence budget for modernisation of the Slovak military by 2016," stressed Kiska.
