Gianni Pittella, the president of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Group in the European Parliament, met the vice-president of the Cuban National Assembly, Ana María Mari Machado, on October 18. The two discussed the United States’ embargo on the island.

“The embargo is a burden left over from a different era, it doesn’t make sense historically and it damages not only the Cuban people and the future of the economy on the island, but also the European companies which legitimately invest or trade with Cuba,” said Pittella.

He also said there should be no obstacles to the prompt ratification of the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (PDCA) between the EU and Cuba.

“We believe that it is time to turn the page and formalise fair and constructive bilateral relations, in political, economic and social terms. These relations will benefit the Cuban and European people.”
