Romania Takes its Risks

After the Western European rejection of the American request for the exemption of US military personnel from referral to the International Court of Justice (the real one) for war crimes, Washington did not give up and started to propose to individual governments bilateral agreements with the same content. The American argument is that they are the only nation to intervene all over the globe to restore law and order and therefore, their “kids” should be on the safe side when they perform their duties at the ends of earth. The European refusal is based on the logic that nobody has asked Washington to make such a “sacrifice” and that it should be better to leave people alone to decide for their own futures. The only European country that has succumbed to the American demand was Romania, which satisfied the American request by taking the risk to see EU entry negotiations freeze. Last week, Greece was invited to sign such a bilateral agreement and in order to support its request the US State Department unofficially commented that it was not satisfied with the progress of the fight against terrorism in Greece so far. I don’t think that Greece will yield to such a request, although when Americans are determined to get something they have several ways and means to obtain it. Finally, I highly doubt if any other government in Western Europe will sign such an agreement. (658)
