Prominent Turkish journalist attacked

Ahmet Hakan works in Dogan news agency, which is accused by the Turkish authorities of promoting “terrorist propaganda,” in favour of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).


Hurriyet columnist and CNN Turk program host Ahmet Hakan was beaten by four assailants outside his home, on Thursday. The Turkish daily reported that Hakan is hospitalized, suffering from a broken nose and cracked ribs.

Hurriyet also reported today that Hakan is a regular target in Turkey’s Government friendly media. According to the left-centre newspaper, pro-government Star newspaper columnist Cem Kucuk had written in a September 9 article, addressing the veteran journalist:
