On April 11, just minutes after the results became clear, Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt said in a statement: “The election results do not just concern Italy.” Verhofstadt gave an unusually frank and rapid show of support for former European Commission President Romano Prodi as opposed to current Italian Prime Minister Umberto Berlusconi, it was reported last week.
“Romano Prodi’s victory is also important for Europe, certainly in this period when a pro-European vision and leadership is necessary,” continued Verhofstadt. “I’m certain that Italy, with Prodi and his extensive European experience, will make a contribution in line with the strong European tradition of Italy as a founder member of the European Union.” Verhofstadt, who in 2004 trailed European capitals in a failed bid to succeed Prodi as President of the European Commission, recently launched the English language version of his book, “A United States of Europe.” At the launch, Prodi took the opportunity to call for greater European integration. Guy Verhoftadt said: “I’m looking forward to cooperating closely, both bilaterally and in a European framework.”
