It must be a matter of European Councils and ECOFIN meetings, as the “pet mouse” of the Justus Lipsius building keeps appearing under the tables at the Press cafe area. The mouse seems to be a pet with proper accreditation, as the Security and building officials don’t seem to bother, but can be very aggressive if journalists try to speed through checks to gain an extra minute of writing time in the working boxes of the EU Council building.

The mouse reappeared the same week that a leak in the non-ventilated press working area of -1 level of the EU Commission headquarters, the Berlaymont, turned the area become unworkable and a serious threat for an electrical fire hazard.

A few years back, on 18 May 2009, a fire broke out at the EU Commission headquarters, starting in the basement of the Berlaymont and spreading up an internal shaft. Journalists first spotted smoke 20 minutes before the evacuation took place at that time, as the building’s smoke detectors failed to go off before evacuation.

Let’s hope that this event is a thing of the past and that another leak will not lead to such unpleasant situations, as reported 7 years ago.
