November 24 general elections: Austrian parties in neck to neck battle


A double dead-heat looks likely as Austria nears the polls near the end of the month. The November 24 general election taking place nearly a year earlier than scheduled could produce a new parliament unrecognisable from the outgoing one. All opinion polls say the right-wing Freedom Party (FP) will be halved following its meteoric rise in the 1990's. The centre-left Greens will nearly double. The Social Democrats (SP) will gain, while the conservative People's Party (VP) will gain more still.
