Nigel Farage, the leader of the eurosceptic Ukip party, failed to be elected in his South Thanet constituency in Kent. It is his 7th failed attempt. So…he is full of joy: “I feel an enormous weight has been lifted from my shoulders… I have never felt happier” he told BBC.

Before the elections he repeatedly said that if he failed to get elected, he would resign as head of Ukip. “I’ll be gone in 10 minutes, he has told BBC”. He even wrote it in his memoir published in March. And indeed he did
