Agriculture Committee MEPs have backed new legislation to tackle outbreaks of animal diseases, such as African swine fever, more effectively, enable the EU to act quickly but responsibly in emergencies and promote prevention.

MEPs stressed the need to promote prevention, for example with better animal husbandry and use of veterinary medicines, and tightened the rules on importing plant products that could pose a risk to public health in the EU.
