The Commission has decided to take action against 17 States with on-going problems of poor air quality, since EU countries are obliged to ensure good air quality for citizens. In particular, the problem concerns tiny particles known as PM10s, coming from a variety of sources such as road traffic, industrial activity and domestic heating which can cause respiratory problems, lung cancer and premature death. As a result, PM10s pose a serious threat to EU citizens’ health.
