Monday, October 17 was the international day for the eradication of poverty. As they do for every anniversary, the EU tried to raise awareness for the policy challenge at hand and Eurostat issued the customary brief.

Poverty is not a challenge for the faint of heart. In 2014, 122 million Europeans or 24.4% of the EU 28 were poor. In 2015, it is "estimated" that this number has been reduced by three million people; "estimated" does not mean "measured."
