For my generation of central and eastern Europeans, membership of the EU was a symbol of reunification with the free, prosperous West. When I led Slovakia to this historical achievement, the whole continent was in a euphoric state. And rightly so: millions of Europeans, who suffered for decades at the periphery of the Soviet empire, were finally reclaiming their European destiny.
Back then, I would have never imagined that a mere decade later the EU would be gripped by an unprecedented number ...
