With thousands of participants converging on Brussels for the annual European Week of Regions and Cities, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker appeared to openly mock British Prime Minister Theresa May when he mimicked May’s widely ridiculed dancing abilities after she walked onstage at a recent Tory conference dancing to a song by 70’s Swedish pop stars ABBA.
Walking up to the podium to open the conference, Juncker said, “We have to say no to all populist movements.” He also advised Europe’s political parties to refrain from copying the growing number of populist parties spreading around Europe.
“I want to make a distinction between the Eurosceptics who have questions and the limited populists with stupid nationalists. They are not the same thing. We must hinder their march towards a non-Europe inspired by these stupid populists and limited nationalists,” said Juncker, before adding that Europeans must “respect those who are sceptical” to help “feed the debate” about the future of the EU.
