Today, the Council adopted two regulations establishing a framework for interoperability between EU information systems in the area of justice and home affairs.
Easier information sharing will considerably improve security in the EU, allow for more efficient checks at external borders, improve detection of multiple identities and help prevent and combat illegal migration.
The regulations establish a European search portal, a shared biometric matching service, a common identity repository and a multiple identity detector.
The systems covered by the regulations provide support for national authorities in the areas of security, border and migration management, visa processing and asylum.
