Greek borders become the EU’s borders

Three emergency mechanisms have been activated for Greece. The EU Council of Justice and Home Affairs did not discuss using Article 26 to remove Greece from Schengen, and gave Greece breathing space to implement all the facilities and mechanisms to help deal with refugee crisis.

Since November 1st, 50,000 people have arrived in Greece; since January 2015, 700,000 people are estimated to have transited through Greece, that is, more than the population of Luxembourg.  The scale is immense, and the European Commission has been working very closely with the Greek authorities to alleviate some of the pressure.
