Germany suspends Schengen: announces emergency border controls


Germany's interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, announced Sunday that Germany will be temporarily exiting Schengen, and invoking emergency powers in order to start protecting its borders.

Earlier today, European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, spoke on the phone with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, where she informed him about the temporary reintroduction of controls at the borders with other EU-Member States, particularly at the German-Austrian border.
