Fowl pest, a form of bird flu, was first identified in Italy in 1878. Since then European poultry farmers have contained mild forms without difficulty. Scientists have monitored an increase in pathogenic strains over the last 30 years. In 1997, a type of virus identified as H5N1 killed six people in Hong Kong, prompting the slaughter of all chickens there.
