Outgoing President of the European Council Donald Tusk held a press conference where Germany’s Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen was nominated as Commission president.
The European Council adopted a decision proposing von der Leyen to the European Parliament as a candidate for President of the European Commission. She will be joined by Belgium’s Charles Michel as European Council President, Josep Borrell Fontelles from Spain as EU foreign affairs chief, and IMF chair Christine Lagarde to lead the European Central Bank.
“A perfect gender balance. I am really happy about it. After all, Europe is a woman,” Tusk said in reference to the Phoenician princess in Greek mythology, from whom the name of the continent of Europe is taken.
