Africa’s crises-ridden Sahel region remains a strategic priority for the EU, according to a conclusion by the European Council that was adopted on 13 May.

The conclusions reiterate that the EU stands by the authorities and people of the Sahel, who continue to face political challenges, ones relating to security, development, climate change and migration.

Since the beginning of the year, several countries in the Sahel have been ravaged by conflict. The EU wants the regional governments – which stretch from Senegal in West Africa to the north of Ethiopia – to take a comprehensive approach towards finding a political solution to the crises which will lead to greater humanitarian support.
