More than 100 public and private partners covering the plastics value chain signed on 20 September the declaration of the Circular Plastics Alliance, which promotes voluntary actions for a well-functioning EU market in recycled plastics.

The declaration was signed by business corporations, research organisations, and local and national authorities. It lays out how the alliance will reach the target of 10 million tons of recycled plastic by 2025, that was set by the EU Commission in its 2018 Plastics Strategy, and that would boost the EU market for recycled plastics by more than 150%.

Out of over 27 million tons of plastic waste collected in Europe every year, less than one third goes to recycling plants.

The declaration lays out concrete actions, including improving the design of plastic products to make them more recyclable, identifying potential for more plastic waste collection, building a Research & Development agenda for circular plastics, as well as establishing a reliable monitoring system to track all flows of plastic waste in the EU.
