European Commission and SYRIZA clash over private education VAT hike

After a confirmation from the European Commission that a proposed VAT hike to 23% on private education is an initiative of the Greek government and not of the EU Institutions, SYRIZA has published a statement to say the exact opposite.


With Greece en route to elections, a controversial measure to introduce a 23% VAT rate on private education has become a clash between the European Commission and former Greek government ruling party, SYRIZA.

The European Commission was asked to comment on Tuesday, on the planned introduction of 23% VAT rate by the government of Greece on private education. Commission spokesperson, Annika Breidthardt, told journalists  that:
