Europol announced on 6 December it has supported the Austrian and Moldovan authorities in dismantling an organized crime ring suspected of smuggling nuclear materials.

The ring was allegedly trying to sell “radiological material to an army” for €3 million. The material was purported to be uranium-235, an isotope that can be used as a fuel for nuclear power plants, but in nuclear weapons as well.

Three people were detained in Vienna, Austria on 24 November, Europol said. Two of them had criminal records, and one of them had been already convicted for a similar crime in the past.

Europol coordinated and supported the operation by deploying an expert on-the-spot to provide analytical and coordination support.
