The first Senior officials’ meeting between the European External Action Service and the Ministry of foreign affairs of Oman was held on 19 September in Brussels, co-chaired by Secretary-General of the EEAS, Helga Schmid, and the Omani undersecretary for diplomatic affairs, Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Issa Al Harithy.
The meeting launched the implementation of the Cooperation Arrangement between the EEAS and the Ministry of foreign affairs of Oman signed last year.
Both sides discussed latest regional developments, including the rise of tensions in the Gulf and ways to promote de-escalation. They also discussed Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, and underlined the need for increased support of the UN-led process. They held talks on the Horn of Africa and maritime security, the Middle East Peace Process, the situation in Iraq and the crisis in Syria, and agreed to cooperate to foster regional stability.
The EEAS also held high-level political consultations with government officials on various topics, including trade and investment, energy, education, research, vocational training and technology.
A second Senior Officials’ Meeting will be held next year in Oman’s capital, Muscat.
