EU Commissioner Avramopoulos positive towards Italian floating hotspots proposal

The Italian floating hotspots proposal has been raised in Italy a few days ago and is also a supported practice from the Dutch Presidency of the European Council, according to leaked memo.


The Commission has previously welcomed the idea of “floating hotspots”, suggesting that each country knows best how to deal with special problems.

“This idea is fully studied by our people. Very soon we shall be in a position to announce the results of our study,” remarked Dimitris Avramopoulos, European Commissioner in charge of Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship. Reminding the Commission’s position when the issue first came up in Sicily, the Commission welcomed the idea.
