EU citizens could have to pay for military research


This week, the EU will decide whether a so-called Preparatory Action for Defence Research is approved.

A preparatory action means a project gets funding for up to three years, during which time a legal base needs to be set if it is to become established policy.

The scheme, which will cover the years 2017-2020, at an estimated cost of € 50-100 million, would pave the way for a full research programme that could require a budget of at least € 3.5 bn between 2021 and 2027.
