The European Commission has announced on 18 September that it is allocating €34.275 million in humanitarian aid for the most vulnerable people in the Great Lakes region of Africa, as the region faces armed conflict, forced displacement, food shortages, epidemics and natural disasters.

Most of the funds (€29.375 million) support urgent humanitarian actions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as support for Burundian refugees in Tanzania and Rwanda, and support for refugees in the neighboring Republic of Congo.

This funding brings the total amount of EU humanitarian aid in the Great Lakes region to €69.74 million this year.
