The EU remained one of the world’s foremost defenders of human rights in 2018, according to an annual report by the European Council adopted that was adopted on 13 May.

Over the course of the year, the EU continued to strongly support the promotion and protection of human rights, despite numerous attacks in countries like Russia, China, Iran, and Egypt. The EU continued to firmly oppose any unjustified restrictions of the rights of freedom of association and of peaceful assembly.
