The European Network Against Racism (ENAR) today called on EU leaders to take action in order to stop racism and discrimination in Europe and promoteequality by ensuring access to quality employment for all people.
As ENAR Chair Chibo Onyeji stated: “We had hoped that after the Breivik tragedy, leaders would wake up and things would change for the better. But two years on, the situation is only getting worse. It’s time for all actors in society to sit up and finally act to ensure we all can live in a society where we are treated equally and are fully included. If they don’t know how to do it, we know. And we are there to help.”
According to ENAR, an uninhibited form of racism has emerged lately, using freedom of expression and ‘white victimhood’ as justifications for promoting exclusion and discrimination.
In addition, in many EU countries, minorities and people from other cultures are portrayed as posing a threat to the ‘native’ population. In specific, in Southern Europe, the ‘natives’ believe that they are victims of ‘uncontrolled migration’, whereas in Western Europe, there is a general belief that citizens’ rights are neglected since excessive attention is paid to the rights of minority communities. Consequently, manifestations of racism have become more assertive and politically acceptable.
As a result, ENAR is urging EU leaders to take the necessary measures and promote quality employment for all, in order to put an end to racism and discrimination.
