The French government has decided to ditch a controversial fuel -carbon tax amid widespread protests against the levy that saw central Paris heavily damaged by street battles between a protest movement known as the Yellow Vests and police authorities.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his government had earlier announced a suspension of the tax, which did not successfully quell the increasingly volatile protests.

This forced Macron to announce on December 5 that the carbon tax plan would be dropped.
