The President of the European Investment Bank Werner Hoyer announced at the Poznań Summit for the Western Balkans on 08 July that the European Investment Bank plans to grow its investment portfolio in the region, prioritizing competitiveness, innovation and climate projects.
The Western Balkans Investment Framework, that blends EIB loans with grants and crowding in private investment, will expand from connectivity to include environment, social economy, digital agenda and a new Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.
During the Summit, the EIB signed its first urban regeneration project in the Western Balkans investing €11 million in the Lana river project in the Albanian capital city of Tirana. The EIB signed on 04 July a similar project under the Economic Resilience Initiative, a €1.1 million grant with the City of Belgrade to support improvements in water and sewage system.
With €8 billion invested in the Western Balkans since 2008 (€1.1 billion in 2018 alone) EIB involvement mobilized at least €16 billion in investments.
