The European Commission has made clear that the Withdrawal Agreement negotiated between outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May and the EU-27 will not change following the election of a new tenant at 10 Downing Street
With the Conservative Party leadership contest in full swing, the European Commission’s chief spokesperson told reporters that a new Tory leader will not change the Brexit “parameters”.
According to Brussels’ chief spokesperson, Margaritis Schinas, “Of course everybody knows what is on the table. What is on the table has been approved and it has been negotiated successfully by the Commission. It was approved by all of the Member States. The election of a new prime minister will, of course, not change the parameters of what is on the table”.
Germany claims no changes should be made and has insisted that no matter who becomes Britain’s next prime minister. the Tory hopefuls should not expect to negotiate a new Brexit deal.
“The EU cannot be blackmailed,” said Germany’s EU Affairs Minister Michael Roth.
