Commission keeps abreast of safer implants

A detailed investigation into the safety of silicone-based breast implants has been ordered by the European Commission after an initial inquiry highlighted health concerns.

These were raised by the EU's scientific committee on emerging and newly identified health risks. The committee was assessing allegations from the French health authorities that French-based manufacturer Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) used "low-quality material (industrial silicone)" in implants.
