Commission slams Spain over buildings’ energy efficiency


The Commission decided on 24 November to refer Spain to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for failure to fully comply with the Directive on the energy performance of buildings.

Buildings are responsible for around 40% of energy consumption and 36% of the CO2 emissions in the EU and the European legislation aims to reduce the energy consumption of buildings, helping to combat global warming and strengthen the EU’s energy security.
