In anticipation of the European Council meeting of 20 and 21 June, the European Commission called on leaders to advance negotiations on the Union’s next long-term budget for the period 2021-2027, so that an agreement can be reached by the fall.
Failure to agree in time would be detrimental to beneficiaries of the Union budget, like students, farmers and researchers. The current EU long-term budget for 2014-2020 was adopted six months late, with negative consequences for many citizens.
In that context, the Commission reviewed the progress made and identified the issues to be addressed, noting that an agreement is in sight, but much remains to be done.
