European citizens are drifting towards social oblivion. Unconsciously, perhaps, but the loss of collective cohesion is becoming a very real danger for people in the EU. That’s according to the Irish President, Michael D Higgins.
Speaking in Strasbourg, he said that attempts by the EU institutions to deal with the current financial crisis have not engaged citizens, who see hurried and desperate attempts at solutions as lacking empathy and sufficient solidarity.
