If Weber were indeed to get the nomination, and be the EPP’s Spitzenkandidat, and find himself the next Commission President, that would leave three Germans in top positions. It is simply untenable that Klaus Welle, the Secretary General of the European Parliament, Martin Selmayr, the Secretary General of the European Commission, stay on in this scenario. And while Selmayr is fresh in the job – and has a more European profile, Welle has been there since 2009, and is more of a German in presentation, attitude, and often motivation.
