Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis on February 27 hosted the first meeting focusing on the 6th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty, which will take place in the Greek capital in March 2008. The theme of the 2008 forum will be Local Democracy to Fight Poverty, while its host-city, Athens, possesses special symbolism, according to the United Nations. Representatives of state, regional and local government, governmental bodies, international organisations and social welfare agencies, along with 50 mayors and representatives of developing nations, will be invited to attend the forum. Previous hosts of the forum were Lyon (1998), Geneva (2000), The Hague (2002), Rome (2004) and Valencia (2006).
