Annual eurozone inflation fell to a more-than four-year low in March increasing the pressure on the European Central Bank to act to head off fears of deflation. The region's cost of living slumped to 0.5 per cent in March compared with 0.7 per cent in February, the European Statistics Office Eurostat said on 31 March 2014.

The Commission officials carried out unannounced inspections at the premises of companies active in the grocery retail sector in France on 20 May, after the concerns that two companies may have violated EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices. They were accompanied by their counterparts from the French competition authority in the investigation.
However, the fact that the Commission carries out such inspections does not mean that the companies are guilty unless proven. The duration of the inspections depends on a number of factors, including the complexity of each case.
