The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) Group in the European Parliament welcomed the signing of the European Pillar of Social Rights, which will be adopted at a gathering of EU leaders and civil society in Gothenburg on November 17.
“I welcome the agreement of this pillar of social rights, which is an opportunity for the EU to disprove claims that it is nothing more than a club of neo-liberal capitalist elites,” said Guy Verhofstadt, president of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament. “The European Union is a union of values and rights which aims to ensure equal opportunities and labour-market access, adequate working conditions, and social protection and inclusion for all European citizens. Together, we must continue our work to build a Union of opportunity and values that is accessible to everyone.”
In turn, Enrique Calvet Chambon, who is ALDE’s coordinator on the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee, said: the Gothenburg summit is “a symbol of the priority we give to the social and economic concerns of individual citizens”.
“From the Gothenburg summit, we must start to build a better Social Europe, where citizens have access to enhanced social justice, better equality, a modernised ‘Welfare State’ and the reinforcement of a feeling of stronger European citizenship, which will make it more attractive to belong to the EU.”
